Welcome to Capoeira Indy

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends self-defense, acrobatics, and music. Capoeira consists of kicks, sweeps, takedowns, and fluid movements while accompanied by traditional instruments and songs. Capoeira is more than just physical training.

Today, Capoeira is practiced worldwide as a celebration of culture, community, and strength. It teaches not only physical skills like agility and coordination but also values of respect, expression, and connection.

Grupo Capoeira Brasil

Capoeira Brasil is one of the most recognized capoeira organizations in the world. It was founded in 1989 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by three Mestres: Mestre Paulão Ceara, Mestre Boneco, and Mestre Paulinho Sabiá. Their mission was to preserve and spread capoeira through training, teaching, and cultural exchange, building a community rooted in tradition while welcoming innovation.

Style of Capoeira

Capoeira Brasil primarily practices Capoeira Regional Contemporânea. This style is a modern evolution of Capoeira Regional, blending elements of traditional Capoeira Angola and the faster, more upright Capoeira Regional style. It emphasizes strong technique, acrobatics, and expression, while maintaining respect for capoeira’s roots, rituals, and music.
