Frequently Asked Questions!

Q: What is Capoeira?

A: Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends movement, music, and cultural expression into one powerful and engaging practice. It combines martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and rhythmic footwork, all performed to the beat of traditional instruments like the berimbau, atabaque, and pandeiro, and guided by songs rooted in history and resistance.

Born from the strength and resilience of enslaved Africans in Brazil, Capoeira is more than just physical training—it’s a celebration of culture, community, and identity. Through its practice, students build full-body strength, coordination, flexibility, and confidence, while also learning about the deep historical and cultural roots that shaped this living art form.

Q: Do you make physical contact with others in Capoeira?

A: Capoeira is a martial art that includes kicks, sweeps, and flowing partner movements. While we do not aim to make physical contact, incidental contact can happen during training or drills. That’s why we emphasize control, awareness, timing, and defensive techniques like dodges (esquivas). Consistent training helps students build spatial awareness, body control, and confidence—all in a safe, respectful environment!

Q: What do I need for my first Capoeira class?

A: Comfortable workout clothes and a water bottle. For Capoeira, we recommend training barefoot or in flat-soled shoes.

Q: Can I learn capoeira without any prior martial arts experience?

A: Yes, capoeira can be learned by people with no prior martial arts experience. All you need is a willingness to learn! Our Fundamental - All levels class is a perfect place for you to start!
